What Do I Say?
The Home Safe Home Project has been developed by Community Works and was launched in January 2009.
The mission of the campaign is to increase the community's knowledge about the services available to victims and offenders, and to engage the community in reaching out to people they know who may need help. Victim Services recognizes that in order for domestic abuse to stop both men and women must be engaged in taking action in the community.
The first phase of the campaign is focused on domestic abuse and has two themes:
click on pictures for more information
- "What Do I Say" to a friend, family member or co-worker who I think is being abused at home
- "What Do I Say" to a friend, family member or co-worker who I think is abusive to his partner or children
You may be visiting this website because you saw campaign materials and are concerned about a friend, co-worker or family member and whether they are being abused or are abusive. Feel free to click on the "What Do I Say?" links for information and ideas of how to talk to someone you care about. Check out the domestic violence link to read about what abuse is. You can also call our HelpLine at 541-779-HELP and talk to someone about what you are concerned about. Workers are trained to help you and if needed, can connect you with a domestic violence victim advocate.
Not all of us are trained therapists and social workers, and even for professionals in the field it can be difficult to know what to say to a victim or perpetrator of domestic abuse. Helping to prevent further violence can be a rewarding experience and Community Works is dedicated to support you in your effort to protect your friends and loved ones. Community members can learn what resources are available to help victims and offenders and provide with caring support and accountability for offenders. Domestic abuse affects all of us. We ask you to share the responsibility for helping end abuse by knowing "What Do I Say?" to victims and abusers.
The Home Safe Home project can send an expert can come to your workplace, class, business etc. and give a presentation on the "What Do I Say?" program. Community Works' Dunn House Outreach program is leading the "What Do I Say?" education outreach component. Call (541) 779-2393 x 268 or 541-890-0192 to make an appointment.
Thank you for being concerned and taking the time to think about "What Do I Say?"
