Community Works Honored April 10, 2025 for the National AGC “In the Community” Award for Mary’s Haven

Mary’s Haven is The First Transitional Living Home in Southern Oregon for Victims of Violence

MEDFORD, OR – Community Works is deeply honored to announce that Mary’s Haven, Southern Oregon’s first transitional living housing facility for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and sex trafficking, has received the AGC “In the Community” Award from the Associated General Contractors of America. This national recognition, awarded on Thursday, April 10 at the closing ceremony for the AGC Annual Convention, in Columbus, Ohio celebrates the extraordinary generosity and collaboration of the Rogue Valley construction community that helped bring Mary’s Haven to life. Kevin Sanders, immediate past board chair for Community Works, and Kim Caplan, Strategy Support Director for Community Works attended the AGC national convention in Ohio to receive this prestigious award.

At its core, Mary’s Haven is more than just a safe house for women and children fleeing from violence —it is a beacon of hope, healing, and renewal for these families. This life-changing project was made possible when Community Works approached Travis Snyder, owner and CEO of Precision Electric and a member of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) Oregon-Columbia Chapter. Moved by the urgent need, Travis rallied fellow AGC members including Kevin Sanders of Corey Robbins Painting Company and Brent Hackwell of KOGAP Enterprises, along with nearly fifty suppliers and subcontractors across the region, to design and build a safe, secure space for those seeking refuge.

“What is unusual about this award, is the quantity of AGC Members that participated in this project,” stated Viktoria Schulz, Marketing Manager for AGC Oregon Columbia Chapter, “in past years this award went to a single AGC member for an impactful project but Mary’s Haven had the entire construction community in the Rogue Valley involved. Our membership understood there was a need and what impact Mary’s Haven would have on Community Works’ ability to break the cycle of domestic abuse by providing transitional housing for survivors. We are proud of our AGC membership for coming together to make such an impact on the region.”

The list of local businesses include: Advantage Plumbing & Mechanical, LLC., Anderson Butte Quarry, LLC, Anderson’s Concrete & Construction, Inc., Ausland Group, Brown & Brown Northwest, CDArchitects, Childress Roofing, Corey Robbins Painting Company, Dave’s Home Supply, Inc., DJB Continuous Gutters, Draperies N Things, G Fab Inc., Garrison Home Furnishing, Hi Banks Rock Products, Inc., Home Insulation Co., Inc., Hoppes Construction, KenCarin Landscape Architecture, Knife River, Knights of Columbus, KOGAP Enterprises, Inc., L&S Rock Products, Marble Concepts & Designs, LLC, Marquess Inc., Massey Interior Construction, Inc., Milestone Landscape Group, Moore Construction, North Coast Electric, Outlier Construction, Pacific Fire Protection, Pariani Land Surveying, Park N Play Northwest, LLC., Precision Electric, Prestige Excavation & Underground, Pro Weld Inc., Rogue Valley Sewer Services, Rubenstein’s, S&S Sheetmetal, Inc., Sherwin Williams, SOS Alarm, Southern Oregon Glass, Southern Oregon Signs, Spenser Weeks Construction, Table Rock Custom Masonry, TDW Excavation, LLC., The Home Depot, and The PARR Company.

“Mary’s Haven represents what is possible when compassion meets action,” said Community Works Executive Director, Barbara Johnson. “We are in awe of the construction community’s generosity—offering not only time and expertise, but also materials, labor, and funding. This award belongs to every person and company that helped us create a sanctuary for survivors.”

The two-story, safe, 5,500-square-foot facility includes 12 family units with shared common areas, a secure administrative wing, laundry facilities, a children’s playhouse, playground, and outdoor healing gardens. Through the dedication of AGC members, the project was completed on time and under budget—allowing Community Works to redirect savings toward future housing solutions.

“The support we received has been overwhelming,” said Kevin Sanders, immediate past chair of Community Works. “Mary’s Haven is already changing lives. It gives survivors a chance to live free from fear, with space and support to rebuild. It’s a game changer for our community.”

AGC members and industry partners donated roofing, flooring, electrical, painting supplies, and more. Others who couldn’t contribute directly stepped up with financial support, helping us stretch every dollar further. These collective efforts have already enabled us to begin planning for a second transitional housing project—an incredible ripple effect of compassion.

“Community Works is an organization worth standing behind,” said Robb Mayers, owner of Outlier Construction. “The impact they make—quietly and persistently—is powerful. We knew any support we gave would make a difference.”

With Mary’s Haven, survivors can now access up to two years of stable housing alongside long-term support services. This housing-first model provides the foundation survivors need to heal, grow, and reclaim their futures.

“Receiving over 9,000 calls a year and helping more than 3,000 people—that’s what Community Works does behind the scenes,” said Travis Snyder. “We’re proud to have played a part in helping them continue this life-saving mission.”

This national honor reflects the heart of what makes our community strong: partnership, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to those in need. Community Works celebrates this award as a shared victory—and a promise of what we can achieve, together.
